01About

47 years on the lake, never paused.

Katayamazu Onsen is a hot spring town set along the rim of Shibayama Lake. Continuous nightly fireworks began here in 1980 as the “Japan Fireworks Festival,” presented jointly by the local tourism association and ryokan cooperative.

Renamed “Noryo Hanabi Festival” the following year, the event has been held every year since — through earthquakes, through the pandemic — without a single year missed.

The fireworks are crafted by Noto Enka Co., Ltd., a pyrotechnics house founded in 1933 in nearby Hodatsushimizu. Together we keep this tradition alive for the next generation.

02What makes it different

Sky and water, both bloom.

  • 01

    Rising from the lake

Fireworks are launched from the surface of Shibayama Lake, opening overhead at close range.

  • 02

    Mirrored on the water

Each burst blooms in both the night sky and the lake — a signature of Katayamazu.

  • 03

    Every night of August

For 30 evenings, the festival weaves into the rhythm of the onsen town.
